In Your Beehive.
June is the month with the shortest days of the year. It is a great time to light up the backyard fire pit or have a Winter Solstice bonfire. Queen's egg production at a minimum or stopped altogether. The colony is maintaining a small brood nest and small bee numbers.
Check your hives from the outside. Lift the back of the hive to gauge the weight and estimate the amount of honey stored. Keep the entrance clear of grass and leaves. Don't open the hive for inspection of frames during winter. Instead, spend your winter learning more about beekeeping. It is time to prepare boxes, frames and equipment for next season.
Winter Solstice
The Winter Solstice, June 21st, is the shortest day of the year and marks a turning point for the beekeeper. However, it is an excellent time to make plans for Spring. On the day I wrote this, it was 89 days to Spring. I can not wait!
