Summer Honey!

What is happening in my hive in January?

Summer brings with it the fantastic possibility of honey. Some take a few surplus honey frames and do a small extraction returning the stickies straight back to the box. On a larger scale, honey supers cleared of bees are removed and extracted in a shed. Honey is a food product, and you need to use safe food handling processes to prevent contamination, even if it is only for home consumption. Summer days of extended daylight encourage the Queen’s egg production to remain high. She maintains a large brood nest that results in growing bee numbers. Inspections and Heatwaves.

Inspect hives in 3-4 week intervals for health issues. Watch the weather forecast for heatwaves. Give your bees full shade and water during heatwaves, even if it is only temporary.
